Interesting Links for 11-12-2010

This week has been a little crazy what with our first snow, throwing my back out, and becoming a walking, talking advertisement for Nyquil, not to mention the ups and downs of this year’s NaNo, but like the Post Office, the interesting links must go out :). I found a nice range of things for you this week. Enjoy.

Anthropology

While not all Eastern or Western cultures fall into these categories, this visual representation of how the same concept can be completely different between cultures is wonderful:

Gadgets

Whether for writing or other purposes, this is a good reminder to keep your eye on what you need as opposed to getting convinced about what you want:

Research

Is it just me, or does this description demand an end of the world scenario where survivors can’t get to the very resources meant to ensure their survival?

Social

Flirting styles show a lot about a person and how they interact with others:

Writing

A wonderful essay exploring the concept of the climax and what elements are necessary to bring it all together:

One woman’s experience/tips on writing to a tight publishing deadline:

Okay, I read the first two. I so agree on the apps thing! I want my phone to make calls or take calls. The keyboard for typing? Not in this lifetime, thank you. Don’t need or want apps. I don’t even want a smart car. lol I’m not a total Luddite, though. I have my computer/laptop to keep me from falling into that trap. 😉 I’ve book marked the others for later reading as I am behind on my word count. Sigh. Good links! Thanks.

Hugs on the word count. I want more out of my phone, but that was a good reminder to focus on what I do want and not just the “latest greatest.”

LOVE the east means west – though checking the artist’s site there are a few I’d love to get a closer look at.

I’m a gadget person as well, and I adore my smart phone. On the other hand I don’t really need it to make/receive phone calls. I so rarely DO that! They look at me oddly too. Chad and I were still on a decade old 400 minute plan (and hadn’t once come near using them) but when we upgraded to his Epic the only plan that gave us our unlimited data was a huuuge one (same price though so what evah)

As for the seed vault. Who needs a major end-of-the-world catastrophe? With the kind of security they’re talking all you need is someone not to be able to find their key! The idea is an excellent one, but do they really think anyone is going to try and break in and destroy the seeds? That seems to be the kind of security they’ve set up.

Yeah, me too. I wanted to find some more pictures of the exhibit, but failed. If you manage, link it back here?

In our family, we have an odd collection. Sean and I are texters, Jacob is 100% phone person, and Colin does texting with me, but talks to a lot of people. Still, we don’t manage to go through our minutes.

My guess on the seed vault is what they’re afraid of is another body taking it over and having a monopoly, but who knows. Maybe they’re afraid of the zombie apocalypse. LOL on losing the key though.
